A variety of other animals “can” be kept with pet turtles, but most are not necessarily recommended as many will not last long with them nor are considered “safe”. But it is nice to keep other animals in a turtle tank as they can keep things interesting and offer some variety.

So, do you keep any other animals with your pet turtles? Let us know in the poll below:

Based on 102 votes at the time of this writing, the following are the survey results for the question “What other pets do you keep with your pet turtles?” Generally, pet turtles are kept with:

  • 22.55% feeder fish
  • 20.59% fish not meant to be eaten
  • 19.61% other turtles of the same species
  • 10.78% other turtles, different species
  • 9.8% snails
  • 8.82% shrimp, crabs, crayfish
  • 4.9% other reptiles or amphibians
  • 2.94% other

It’s not surprising to find that almost half (43.14% feeder fish and non-feeder fish) of pet turtle owners keep fish with their turtles. Fish are the cheapest addition to a turtle tank that do not require much else in terms of water gallonage/resources. Adding fish also greatly increases the variety of activity that goes on in a turtle tank.

I’m very curious about the 2.94% that said they keep “other” pets with their turtles. What could they be? They’re not fish, reptiles, amphibians, invertebrates (shrimp, crabs, crayfish, snails)…Do let me know…
