As I mentioned previously, after I moved the turtles in their 150g turtle tank, I turned their old home into a planted tank. The goal of the planted tank, besides trying to make it look nice, is to breed guppies and grow anacharis for the turtles to eat.

In the months leading up to setting up the tank I had started growing and multiplying my plants. I started with one anubias plant, and one bunch of both the regular and twisted (windelov) java fern, and one section of Christmas moss. With some careful rhizome cutting and tying the plants to rocks and letting them be in some tupperware, I ended up with the amount I currently have.

Here’s a video that show’s the tank as it was on October 10, 2008. The main difference with the tank when I first set it up was that it has gravel in the videos below. The plant layout isn’t that appealing or anything, I still didn’t know what I wanted to do with it at that point. Anyway, the video:

Here is the tank as of October 10, 2008. At that time the tank had guppies, red cherry shrimp, anubias, java fern, twisted java fern, crypts, Christmas moss, and bacopa. It is a low-tech planted tank, meaning I have low light (a common 12" 8w daylight florescent tube) and doesn’t have any of the fancy planted tank stuff like CO2 equipment, fertilizers, and whatnot.

A video of a male guppy chasing a female in the tank.

And lastly, a video of one of my red cherry shrimp eating. Again, it’s in the same aquarium.

Comments

  1. [..YouTube..] I started with one male guppy and two females. In the video, there’s a bunch of fry swimming around. After the fry get a bit bigger, I feed them to my turtles, which reduces the guppy population.

  2. [..YouTube..] “urges” LOL btw can java ferns be grown with a flurecent bulb that comes stock with the fixture? or would I need something higher? I herd it doesnt need high lighting?

  3. [..YouTube..] I wouldn’t know for sure. The only fish I’ve kept them with have been live-bearers, so I can’t say for certain since I don’t have any direct personal expereince

  4. [..YouTube..] does christmas expand or does it just grow? i just bought some and im confused how it works. do i need to buy several pads to make a wall out of it or cover the ground with it?

  5. [..YouTube..] @axolotlwithexotics in my tank, I’d say it just grows. Grows way faster than it expands.. I’d get several to make a moss wall or cover some substrate
