(This is part of a series where I review several commercially available pet turtle basking platforms, because my pet turtles need new basking platforms.)

Exo Terra Turtle Bank

The turtle bank is described as:

The Exo Terra Turtle Bank is a unique floatation basking area for aquatic turtles. Held in place by magnets, the Exo Terra Turtle Bank can be positioned in the corner of the terrarium to maximize swimming area. Auto adjusting to all water levels, the submerged ramp allows turtles easy access to a dry basking area for maximum exposure to heat and UVB lamps. Available in 3 sizes, it accommodates any sized aquatic turtle terrarium or to allow multiple sized Turtle Banks within the same terrarium.

The Exo Terra Turtle Bank integrates easily into any aquatic terrarium setup, automatically adjusts to all water levels, is kept in position with included magnets, has a submerged ramp for easy access in and out of the water, and is an ideal basking or terrestrial area for semi-aquatic animals.

The turtle bank is held in place by two small magnets, which initially let me think that it would not be strong enough.

A strongly written article made me think I was completely wrong and that this was such a stellar product – but the article, appearing as a review of a company that sells this item, is obviously biased. A user review of this product on Amazon showed a much truer and more believable image of this product (which incidently is still better than my initial low expectations). The only logical conclusion about this product is that it is just like all the other turtle basking platforms available out there: good for smaller turtles, not good for larger turtles.

Yeah: Some very strong points make this turtle basking platform a good product.

  • The magnets are stronger than they look and do a rather good job
  • The product (without a large turtle) floats very well in the water by itself
  • The product is made of a tough material that will not be easily eaten by a pet turtle
  • Nice and very natural looking
  • Adjusts to water levels (always a plus!!)

Boo: One very strong negative point overshadows the many things this turtle product has going for it….

  • It does not accommodate larger turtles. Case in point, it couldn’t handle a 9″ red ear slider turtle

My decision: My turtles are getting large, I need a product that will accommodate them and the growth that they will still face. This product might work well for a while as my turtles aren’t quite at the 9″ mark yet, but one of them will eventually reach it and surpass it. So no, I’m not going to use the Exo Terra Turtle Bank. It is not a product that will be useful for the lifetime of a pet turtle.
